Hi, my name is Tom Shead and live on the Notts/ Derbyshire border approx. 7 miles from Bolsover wher Peter Fidler was born.
A few years ago I bought a book, TRUE BRIT, The adventures of Peter Fidler, by K Gordon Jackson, published in 1999.
The book tells how the Earl Scarsdale persauded Peter's father to send Peter as a companion to Scarsdale's son to a public school in London which is how he received a good education to stand him in good stead when he joined the Hudson Bay Company.

I visited Galliano Island in 2007 where one of my relatives lives and he showed me the Fort Garry Reunion book and when I told him Peter Fidler was born about 4 miles from where his GGrandfather lived before emigrating to Canada he was very impressed.
The Sheads settled in Manitoba in 1879 and there is a newspaper cutting from the Wiinpeg Times, 1879 stating William Henry Shead and Thomas Jackson were looking for land investments
to bring 30 Derbyshire families to the area, no evidence it took place.

On my way to Chesterfield Hospital I pass Sutton Farm where the Fidlers lived, I also note from
Peter's family tree that his mother was Mary Glossop, my GGrandmother was Mary Glossop Foulds of Harthill, South Yorkshire, England.

Last October 2011, I held the Shead Reunion and relatives from Canada and Australia attended and the Canadians from Selkirk were impressed with Bolsover Castle and Sutton Farm.
I am in touch with 4 Shead families in Canada and one Shead has a lot to do with the Peguis Nation and Aboriginee Acheivements.

The ISBN 1-898941-48-3 and is printed by Country Books, Courtyard Cottage, Little Longstone,
Bakewell, Derbyshire, DE45 1NN

I hope this is of interest.

Thanks very much for that Tom. Very interesting!

I believe the fellow from Selkirk (my own hometown) you mentioned is Bill SHEAD who I have met. I believe his maternal grandfather was Nathaniel ASHAM b-1883, a son of Chief William ASHAM b-1853 whose family is featured on my sister-website (Red River Ancestry). Here’s the link: CHIEF WILLIAM ASHAM

Hello. Further to your post, my great-great-great-great-great grandparents were Mary Glossup born march 25th, 1747 in Derbyshire and died May 16, 1809. Her husband was my great-great-great-great-great grandfather was James Fidler born 1734 in Derbyshire and died also on May 16 th the same day as Mary. I can go back to 1671 in the family tree but you probably know most of it. Perhaps we are related. Thanks Lesley.
