Alexander KENNEDY Born 16 Jan 1866 in Manitoba, Canada

Post by Simpson » Mon Jan 04, 2010 11:53 pm

Hi Everyone!

I am a Fidler descendent as well. My Great Great Grandparents were Amilia Fidler and John McKenzie Simpson( John's parents were Sir George Simpson & Margaret Taylor). Amilia's Father was Charles Fidler, and her Grandfather was our Peter Fidler.

I am looking for information on Alexander Kennedy Born 16 Jan 1866 in Manitoba, Canada. He was married to Catherine TRAVERSE b: 1870. They had a Daughter: Flora KENNEDY b: 27 Jul 1890 in St. Peter's, MB, Canada. Flora was married to Alexander "Sandy" SAYER b: 11 Dec 1882 in Mapleton, MB, Canada c: 11 Dec 1882 in St. Clements, Mapleton, MB, Canada. I have all info on the Sayer side, but can not find any info on Flora's Father Alexander Kennedy b 1866. Any help is welcomed.

Thanks!
Carol Ann Simpson

Alex KENNEDY enlisted for World War I at Selkirk in 1916. In his attestation record his birth date is stated as Jan 16, 1872 in St Peters. He was 44 years old, 5' 5" tall, dark complexion, brown eyes, and had a small scar on his left cheek. He stated his next of kin as his wife, Katherine of Selkirk. Census 1901 gives his birthdate as Feb 10, 1868, and you have a birth date of Jan 16, 1866. In the 1916 census he was said to be 46 years old, matching the year on his attestation.

In 1896 St Jude's Anglican Church in Grand Marais was built with hand-sawn black poplar logs. It was said that one of the best men who could hand-saw logs was Alex KENNEDY. Jim RAVEN, a one-armed Indian from Scanterbury, hand-built the first pews in the church.

Alex died in 1951 and Catherine in 1959. They are both buried, side by side, in the St Peters Church Cemetery.

I cannot find any records to prove it, but I believe Alex was probably the son of Margaret DENNET & Alexander KENNEDY SR (born around 1852, both Indigenous). They lived in St Peters and had a son named Alexander who was 11 years old in 1881 (so born around 1870). It is very probable that this was our Alex.

Your cousin (Nicole) mentions Catherine TRAVERSE or BEAR as Alex's wife. Manitoba Vital Stats has Alexander KENNEDY married May 20, 1886 in St Clements to Catherine TRAVERS. She was born around 1870 and I think she was probably a daughter of Fanny THOMAS & Duncan TRAVERS, an Indian born around 1838.
